A major symposium on Inuit visual arts, ᕿᓐᓂᕋᔮᑦᑐᖅ Qinnirajaattuq / Ripples: Making Waves in Inuit Art, will be held in Montreal from November 6-8, 2024. This gathering marks the culmination of the Inuit Futures in Arts Leadership initiative and coincides with a new permanent Inuit art exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, bringing together artists, curators, and scholars from across Inuit Nunaat.

Event Overview
The ᕿᓐᓂᕋᔮᑦᑐᖅ Qinnirajaattuq / Ripples: Making Waves in Inuit Art Symposium is the closing event for the seven-year Inuit Futures in Arts Leadership SSHRC-funded partnership grant. The Ripples Symposium, scheduled for November 6th to 8th, 2024, in Montreal/Tiohtiàke at Concordia University, represents the first major gathering focused solely on Inuit visual arts since 2011. The symposium coincides with the opening of a new permanent Inuit art exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, curated by Nunavimmiuk curator, artist, and filmmaker asinnajaq.

Symposium Title & Design
The title “ᕿᓐᓂᕋᔮᑦᑐᖅ Qinnirajaattuq / Ripples” was suggested by Krista Ulujuk Zawadski in collaboration with Taqralik Partridge and Heather Igloliorte. It reflects the impact of the Inuit Futures project, symbolizing how small acts can reverberate widely. The logo, designed by Kalaaleq Inuk & Danish Freelance graphic designer Coco Apunnguaq Lynge, pays homage to Mark Emerak’s ‘The Great Whirlpool’. It depicts kayakers encountering a breaching whale, symbolizing how our actions and stories impact ourselves and others across time and space.

Symposium Activities
The three-day symposium will feature a variety of events hosted by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Avataq Cultural Institute, Concordia University, La Guilde, FOFA Gallery, and other venues throughout Montreal. Activities include panels, discussions, exhibition openings, curatorial talks, a gallery crawl, performances, vendors, and workshops. These events aim to share knowledge and highlight innovative practices in Inuit art from across Inuit regions, Canada, and the circumpolar world.

Registration Information & Vendor Opportunities
Registration for the symposium will open in early fall 2024, with priority given to Inuit participants to ensure strong representation from across the community. The event will feature a marketplace for Inuit vendors to showcase and sell their work, including art, jewelry, clothing, and other products. With an expected attendance of over 300 Inuit artists, educators, art enthusiasts, and professionals, the symposium offers an excellent opportunity for Inuit creators. Inuit vendors interested in participating can email for more information.
