Sámi architect and artist Joar Nango brings his acclaimed installation Girjegumpi (2018) to Objectspace following its presentation at the Nordic Countries Pavilion during the 18th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia. The project, which combines a sculptural-architectural platform with a library of materials on Sámi and Indigenous architectures, takes its name from the Sámi words for “mobile cabin” (gumpi) and “book” (girji). As one of few practicing Sámi architects, Nango began collecting books and materials about Sámi architecture and Indigenous worldviews during his studies, which evolved into this dynamic platform. The exhibition features publications, moving images, textiles and ephemera reflecting the project’s collaborative foundation. Indigenous architects from Aotearoa, Sápmi and Australia have contributed texts, with emphasis on Māori architectural perspectives through processes of tautoko and awhi. Building an Archive of Indigenous Architecture runs from November 30, 2024, to March 16, 2025, at Objectspace.
