In a landmark decision Greenland’s Parliament voted on November 20 to create the country’s first film institute, Kalaallit Nunaanni Filminstitutti, set to launch January 2026. This is a major step forward for Greenland’s filmmakers, who have long worked to build support for their industry. The institute will help promote Greenlandic films international outreach through festivals, funding, and talent scouting programs. It will also manage a film archive and offer a 25% rebate to international productions filming in Greenland. The institute’s leadership will include representatives from key cultural organizations, and a CEO will be chosen to build a team including a film commissioner. This development puts Greenland alongside the Sámi Film Institute and Canada’s Indigenous Screen Office in creating dedicated support for Indigenous filmmakers, adding to the growing network of Indigenous film organizations across the Arctic region.
